Durango's Merkatu Plaza has added three new businesses to its offerings, following the second tender process promoted by the City Council. Of the five vacant spaces, three have already been awarded: a craft store, a bakery, and an ice cream parlor. In total, four companies applied for the process, although only three were ultimately selected, according to municipal sources.
These additions will complement the market's current offerings, which already include a butcher shop, a delicatessen, zero-kilometer products, pickles, and a bar. With these new openings, the Consistory aims to strengthen the commercial diversity of the plaza and consolidate it not only as a shopping area but also as a meeting point for citizens.
Despite this progress, two of the stalls offered in this latest call have remained empty. However, the Government Team has already announced that it will re-tender them shortly, with the aim of completing the market's full occupancy and continuing to expand its offerings with complementary activities. The awarded companies must start their activity within a maximum of 30 days from the formalization of the contract. This contract will have an initial duration of one year, extendable up to a maximum of ten, and establishes the obligation to maintain a minimum opening schedule of five hours daily from Monday to Saturday.
With the arrival of these new businesses, Merkatu Plaza reinforces its role as an economic and social engine for the center of Durango, committing to local products, commercial variety, and the revitalization of a key space for the life of the municipality.
The renovated Merkatu Plaza opened its doors on November 3. During the construction period, the infrastructure was adapted, commercial stalls were renovated, and new spaces were created to boost the social and cultural life of Durango. The Durango City Council allocated the necessary resources to ensure that the market, in addition to being functional, is an attractive and accessible space for all people. The market's rehabilitation was carried out with an integral approach, including the renovation of both the internal structure and the facilities, with special attention to accessibility and sustainability. With the purpose of making Merkatu Plaza a meeting place, the project has designed multipurpose spaces where cooking workshops, cultural activities, and gastronomic events will be held, designed to bring local tradition closer to all citizens.
