The Bilbao City Council, through its municipal company Bilbao Ekintza, has opened the application period for the first edition of the Dueto program, which aims to promote collaboration among design sector companies to drive innovation and competitiveness.

This initiative encourages cooperation between design professionals and entities from other sectors, with the goal of highlighting design "as a lever for innovation, competitiveness, and business improvement." The program will take place between Bilbao and Detroit (USA), in collaboration with Design Core Detroit, and will last between three and six months.
Both cities are part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, and this initiative has emerged from their exchange and collaborative work program, based on a cross-working model. The methodology involves an exchange: a design professional from the American city will assist a company in Bilbao in solving a challenge posed by the company using design methodologies. Simultaneously, a designer from Bilbao will travel to Detroit to participate in an equivalent process.
The Dueto call is aimed at SMEs with a registered office or workplace in Euskadi that have a specific challenge or need that can be addressed through design. Applications are accepted from this Monday until May 12. One company will be selected, and it will not have to cover the expenses derived from the activities of the Detroit designer.
Subsequently, a second call will be made to select the professional best suited to resolve the challenge posed by the American company. The City Council urges companies to submit their applications for a program that represents "a unique opportunity" to incorporate strategic design into processes, access international talent, and become part of a creative network "with global projection."
In this way, the Council also seeks to strengthen Bilbao's image as a city associated with design, an "emerging and priority" sector within the framework of smart specialization.
