Farmers in the Urgell region are facing a critical situation as a massive rabbit plague destroys cereal, vineyard, and olive crops across the Lleida plains.

Recent heavy rains have led to an abundance of food, causing a population explosion of rabbits. In towns like Verdú, Preixana, and Maldà, the damage is so severe that many farmers have decided not to plant their fields this season to avoid further financial losses.

"This is the worst year we can remember. There are entire estates where it is not worth sowing."

The Generalitat de Catalunya recently announced two million euros in aid, but local agricultural unions argue this is not enough to cover the rising costs of production and the psychological toll on the farming community.
