The public body allocates an annual income to citizens who receive a contributory pension and have a rental agreement with a minimum duration of 180 days. This aid, managed by the Institute of Seniors and Social Services (Imserso), aims to alleviate housing expenses for the elderly.
According to Imserso estimates, approximately half a million people over 65 years old in Spain currently live in rented accommodation. In response to this situation, Social Security has implemented this measure to support retirees, particularly those receiving a non-contributory pension.
The aid is primarily aimed at those who receive a non-contributory pension for retirement or disability. To access this extra annual income of 525 euros, applicants must meet several requirements: have a recognized non-contributory retirement or disability pension, not own property, possess a signed rental contract, that the rented dwelling be their habitual residence (rental not less than one year), have resided there for at least 180 days prior to the application, and that the landlord is not a spouse or close relative, nor maintain a cohabitation union with the landlord.
Social Security data indicates that 27,000 applications have been processed this year, resulting in the approval of 22,000 aid grants, representing a disbursement of 11,571,000 euros from public funds.
Once all the required documentation is submitted, Imserso has approximately three months to evaluate the application and notify the approval of the aid, which is received in a single payment.
