Many workers in the Canary Islands are already realizing that this year's Income Tax Return campaign will require them to pay more in IRPF. This situation, affecting thousands of citizens, has been detailed by a labor law expert, who explained the reasons why this declaration could be one of the most expensive in recent years for many taxpayers.
The specialist argues that the current tax system penalizes the working class, in an economic context marked by persistent inflation and the generalized increase in the cost of living.
“"We will pay more taxes than ever in Spain's history in the income tax return presented now."
According to the expert, salary is the most fiscally penalized source of income, above investments or other revenues. This situation places middle-income earners in a vulnerable position, which has progressively worsened over the years.
One of the main factors behind this increase in tax pressure is inflation. The expert criticizes that IRPF brackets are not adjusted to the rising prices, which generates a phenomenon known as “bracket creep.” This means that, even if salaries increase slightly to compensate for inflation, taxpayers may move into a higher tax bracket and pay more taxes, without having actually improved their real purchasing power.
“"We are increasingly entering higher tax brackets even if it's not enough to pay rent, let alone buy a home."
This scenario has direct consequences for taxpayers, as it increases the percentage of taxes on their income and reduces their savings capacity. In many cases, this translates into less favorable tax returns, with lower refunds or even amounts due, especially if annual withholdings have not been sufficient. The situation is exacerbated by current high prices for housing, utilities, and food, meaning that the tax increase is not accompanied by an improvement in the quality of life.
The expert also points out that, despite the increase in tax pressure, State revenue continues to reach historic highs, although this increase is not perceived positively by citizens. Given this outlook, it is recommended to thoroughly review the tax return before confirming it to ensure the application of all eligible deductions and tax benefits.
