Cox, a company specializing in water management and clean energy, intends to establish a regional green hydrogen distribution system in the province of Almería. This initiative, operating under the regulatory framework of the Andalusian Energy Agency, will feature operational centers in Huércal-Overa and Níjar, representing an investment exceeding 20 million euros.
The investment aims to monetize clean fuel within Almería's agribusiness sector, seeking to reduce logistical costs and enhance competitiveness. Cox estimates that the progressive adoption of green hydrogen could lower fuel expenses by approximately 5%, thereby boosting the province's agricultural sector.
The planned facilities in Almería will be designed with minimal land occupation and environmental integration criteria. They will combine a solar plant and a hydrogen production facility on a site under 2,000 square meters. The project also includes energy management via a control center, solar self-consumption, electrification of municipal vehicles, digitalization of waste management, and modernization of public lighting.
Green hydrogen, produced through electrolysis using renewable electricity, is recognized as a clean fuel with significant future potential. Almería is emerging as a key hub for its development in Andalusia, supported by collaborations with the University of Almería, private experts, and the Ministry of Industry. Other companies such as Biorizon, Rijk Zwaan, and Agrocolor are also exploring similar projects in the region.
Cox has previously participated in other tenders in Almería, including improvements to the desalination plant in Carboneras and a solar field in Benahadux. Currently, the company is engaged in the 'Green Hydrogen Industrial Ecosystem in Almería' flagship project, funded by the Just Transition Fund, which incorporates Cox's projects under the name Cox Aytana.
