The Airbus facility in Sevilla has secured a new contract for the assembly of the C295 aircraft. The Royal Thai Navy has formalized the purchase of two units equipped with electro-optical and infrared sensors for maritime surveillance and search and rescue operations. This order follows a recent acquisition by the country's Air Force.
The two aircraft destined for the Thai navy, scheduled for delivery by the end of 2028, will operate from the U-Tapao base in Sattahip. This order guarantees additional work for the Sevilla assembly lines, reinforcing the C295's position as a global benchmark in military tactical transport.
The Royal Thai Air Force last week acquired two C295 aircraft in tactical transport configuration, also to be manufactured in Sevilla, with the first delivery expected in the first half of 2029. These aircraft will bolster the Asian country's defensive capabilities, which already operates three units of the model since 2016, bringing the total to seven.
The C295, known for its versatility, can carry up to 70 soldiers or 49 paratroopers, operate from unprepared airstrips, and perform cargo and personnel drops, in addition to medical evacuation missions. Thailand thus joins seven other Asia-Pacific countries operating this model, which holds an 85% market share in its segment globally.
With 333 orders from 39 countries and 750,000 flight hours accumulated by the global fleet, the aircraft manufactured in Sevilla reaffirms its leadership in military tactical transport.
Furthermore, the Airbus plant in Sevilla recently completed the delivery of the first three C295 aircraft for the Spanish Ministry of Defence, out of a total of 18 units intended to replace older aircraft in the training of pilots and paratroopers for the Spanish Air and Space Force. This contract, valued at 1.56 billion euros, establishes the Air Force as the second-largest global operator of these aircraft.
The agreement with the Spanish Ministry of Defence is divided into two groups: the first, for training and transport, will be delivered between 2026 and 2028 and will operate from the air base in Matacán, Salamanca. The second group, for paratrooper and cargo drops, is scheduled for delivery between 2030 and 2032 and will be used at the Paratrooper Military School in Alcantarilla, Murcia.
The contract also includes the supply of flight simulators, computer-assisted instruction systems, and training management software, as well as comprehensive fleet support until December 2032.
