Works on railway infrastructure in the province of Castellón continue to accumulate delays. The corridor between Castelló and Tarragona is experiencing a minimum delay of five months, as the total traffic cut to adapt the tracks to international gauge, scheduled for November, has been postponed until April of next year.
However, users of the Sagunto-Teruel line, which passes through several municipalities in Alto Palancia, have been suffering the total closure of the line for the longest time. Works for the future electrification of the route began in February 2025 and were supposed to last nine months, but have now been ongoing for 14 months without service.
Adif, the managing entity for railway facilities, indicated that, after an initial extension, the reopening would take place in the first quarter of this year. Although there is no official confirmation of the new extension, a network impact document, published at the end of March, refers to an "extension of the cut," with the return of the line "under study" beyond April 30.
“"The work has progressed, but it seems that the deadline they set for the first quarter of 2026 will not be met after postponing it in November 2025."
Sources consulted consider this outcome a certainty, and the CGT union in the railway sector mentions that the reopening could be "in September," almost two years after the start of the closure. In January, the Teruel Association of Railway Friends (Ataf) also expressed doubts about the condition of some sections.
Since the beginning of this work, train users in inland Castellón have had an alternative bus service. The operation is complex, as the clearance at level crossings and tunnels must be increased to allow for the future installation of catenary and the replacement of diesel locomotives with electric trains.
This step will be taken on the Teruel-Zaragoza section, but will not reach Alto Palancia for several years, as not all elements are yet ready. The latest progress was in March, when Adif opened a public information period for the expropriation procedure of land for electrical substations in the municipalities of Jérica, Segorbe, Torás, and Viver. Simultaneously, the electrification project is being drafted, which will be followed by the tender for the works, estimated to last a year and a half. If there are no further delays, the modernization of this line will arrive by the end of this decade.
