Mercadona has opened a new supermarket in Madrid, located on Joaquín María López street, debuting the 'Tienda 9' model which emphasizes fresh produce and an improved shopping experience.

The new store, representing an investment of 9.2 million euros and creating 28 new jobs (bringing the total staff to 48 employees), features a complete reorganization of its space. Unlike previous models, 'Tienda 9' is structured by processes to make product placement more intuitive and streamline the shopping experience, also aiding staff efficiency.
This reorganization introduces the Central Workshop (Obrador Central), an area consolidating fresh product preparation tasks such as cutting, cooking, and packaging. This allows for increased space dedicated to these items in self-service areas and optimizes resources, leading to savings of up to 10% in energy and up to 40% in water consumption, according to the company.
The establishment also integrates technological solutions for enhanced efficiency, including Aerofoil systems in refrigerated display units to reduce cold air loss and improve thermal comfort, and the use of CO₂ as a refrigerant to minimize environmental impact. Equipment has been renewed and machine rooms updated for better maintenance and efficiency.
This new model, an evolution of the previous 'Tienda 8', is part of Mercadona's transformation plan set to run between 2026 and 2033, with an overall investment of 3.7 billion euros. The Joaquín María López store also offers 37 parking spaces, including spots for electric vehicles and bicycles, along with a customer rest area.
The supermarket operates from Monday to Saturday, 09:00 to 21:30, and also provides an online shopping service. With this opening, Mercadona continues to advance in renovating its store network, aiming to combine a simpler shopping experience with greater operational efficiency.
