Flames have reduced the Maíz Maya factory in Alcobendas to ashes overnight. The fire, although it caused no injuries, has devastated the facilities and left the 46 workers of the plant, which had been in operation for over 10 years, in a state of uncertainty.
The mayor of Alcobendas, Rocío García Alcántara, has been informed of the incident and described the alert as one of those messages that «no mayor wants to read». Despite the magnitude of the fire, the most positive outcome is the absence of personal injuries, a fact the mayor highlighted as the most important aspect.
The emergency operation, involving the Local Police of Alcobendas and Madrid Firefighters, worked intensely to extinguish the blaze. The City Council has expressed its gratitude for the work carried out by the emergency services.
García Alcántara personally conveyed the council's support to Edgar Reyes, the project manager, whom she met during her election campaign. The mayor acknowledged the «effort and enthusiasm» behind the factory and pledged to be «by their side to help them, protect employment, and do everything possible for Maíz Maya to rise again as soon as possible».
The primary concern following the incident is the future of the 46 employees. The City Council has prioritized job protection, although no specific measures beyond the public commitment to support the company have been detailed at this time.
This event occurs shortly after another fire registered at kilometer 24 of the A-1 highway near San Sebastián de los Reyes, which necessitated the evacuation of properties adjacent to the affected area and involved several units of the Community of Madrid Fire Department, the Civil Guard, and Local Police.
