Frosts recorded in late March have caused estimated losses of nearly 4 million euros across approximately 1,200 hectares of crops in the regions of Vall d’Albaida, La Costera, and Ribera Alta, as reported by La Unió Llauradora.

These low temperatures, which primarily affected crops such as persimmon (caqui), summer fruit trees, and almond trees, occurred during the nights of March 28 to 30. During this period, thermometers dropped to unusual levels for the season, negatively impacting budding and the development of flower buds, a particularly sensitive stage for plants.

"These frosts are not typical of winter; rather, they occur at a critical moment in the vegetative cycle, which multiplies the impact of the cold."

Carles Peris · General Secretary of La Unió Llauradora
The most affected crops include persimmon, as well as fruit trees such as apricot, peach, plum, and almond. Damage to young tissues could compromise flowering and significantly reduce fruit set, thereby affecting final production. However, La Unió notes that the evolution of the crops will need to be monitored to accurately determine the full extent of the losses.
In response to this situation, La Unió Llauradora has urged Agroseguro to expedite assessments so that farmers can quickly receive compensation from their agricultural insurance. Furthermore, the organization has requested the Generalitat Valenciana to implement various support measures, including direct aid for those affected, the waiver of IBI (property tax) for agricultural plots and constructions, a 50% bonus on Social Security contributions, and a 12-month deferral of the remaining 50% for self-employed individuals in the agricultural sector.
Additional requests include a reduction in the net yield index for IRPF (personal income tax) and the establishment of preferential credit lines to support affected farmers. Carles Peris emphasized the importance of adapting agricultural policies and risk coverage instruments to cope with extreme weather events, which are becoming increasingly frequent and unpredictable.
