Puertos Canarios, an entity attached to the Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Government of the Canary Islands, is actively collaborating with the Spanish Federation of Associations of Sports and Tourist Ports (Marinas de España) to make this candidacy a reality. The goal is for the archipelago to host this important forum under the theme «Strategic infrastructures for coastal development».
The managing director of Puertos Canarios, José Gilberto Moreno, and the president of Marinas de España, Tomás Azcárate, have held a working meeting to outline the proposal. According to Moreno, holding this event in the islands would allow for greater visibility of the Canary Islands port community and the sharing of experiences in sustainable management, integrating ports with the urban environment.
“"The Marinas de España forum seeks to connect experiences and raise quality standards, and the Canary Islands are a unique maritime enclave to develop a proposal with the sector."
The initiative is conceived as a space for reflection on the new role of marinas, which have evolved from simple docking points to activity centers connected to municipal life. The program will include presentations and meetings aimed at public administrations, marina managers, nautical tourism operators, service and maintenance companies, auxiliary industry, sectoral associations, and experts.
Among the topics to be discussed are governance challenges, the jurisdictional framework, and regulatory and administrative obstacles affecting the modernization of these infrastructures. The organization also seeks to foster the exchange of best practices and success stories in management, services, and innovation, with the aim of improving the integration of sports ports into the territory and their adaptation to new demands for sustainability and quality.
The candidacy includes the signing of a Canary Islands Pact for Marinas and Sustainable Coastal Development, an institutional commitment document that seeks to strengthen administrative coordination, sustainability, infrastructure modernization, and continuous dialogue between administrations and the private sector. Marinas de España groups more than 150 facilities on the Spanish coast, while Puertos Canarios operates under the name Ecopuertos autonómicos de Canarias.
