The municipalities of Uribe Kosta, including Barrika, Berango, Sopela, Urduliz, Plentzia, Gorliz, and Lemoiz, are seeking to reorient their economic profile. Behargintza, the employment support and economic promotion service of the Commonwealth, proposes to redirect the productive model of the area to overcome its 'bedroom community' designation.
The cornerstone of this transformation will be the creation of a supra-municipal development agency. This entity will coordinate initiatives, facilitate external investment, and support emerging projects. The involved institutions emphasize that its implementation responds to an operational need to advance towards a "more competitive and connected" framework.
The new strategy is structured around four key areas for future growth: energy transition, the marine economy, digitalization of processes, and innovation applied to health and care. These lines are supported by existing infrastructures and capabilities in the territory, such as the Basque energy testing platform in Lemoiz, the Plentzia Marine Station, the 42 Urduliz programming campus, and the hospital in this municipality.
The second block is the blue economy, where the sea gains relevance as an opportunity for new technologies, especially in biotechnology and resource utilization. The third axis is digital transformation, aiming to incorporate technological tools into business and administrative activities. Finally, health innovation focuses on developing solutions related to well-being, socio-health care, and improving assistance services.
The model also aims to consolidate cooperation channels among local administrations, private companies, and knowledge centers. Improving access to public funding and creating collaboration networks are considered essential for facilitating the growth of projects with potential both within and outside the territory.
