Unemployment in Euskadi sees slight decrease in May

Euskadi recorded 103,733 unemployed in May, 72 fewer than in April and 926 fewer than a year ago.

Euskadi registered 103,733 unemployed individuals in May, marking a decrease of 72 from the previous month and 926 from the previous year.

Euskadi recorded 103,733 unemployed people in May, a decrease of 72 compared to April (-0.07%), according to data released by the Ministry of Labour and Social Economy and the Basque Government. Compared to May 2025, the number of unemployed has fallen by 926 people (-0.88%).
Nationally, unemployment dropped by 1.54% month-on-month, with 36,323 fewer unemployed, and by 5.47% year-on-year, representing 134,162 fewer people out of work.
By territory, Araba saw 170 fewer unemployed (-0.96%) compared to the previous month, while Bizkaia added 50 more (+0.09%) and Gipuzkoa registered 48 more (-3.52%). Year-on-year, all three territories show decreases: Araba by 607 (-3.34%), Bizkaia by 34 (-0.06%), and Gipuzkoa by 285 (-1.03%).
Of the 103,733 unemployed in Euskadi in May, 60,190 were women and 45,543 were men. By age group, those over 45 years old accounted for 58,588, those aged 30-44 numbered 28,355, and those under 30 totalled 16,790.
By sector, unemployment increased month-on-month in Construction and in the Previously Unemployed collective. Year-on-year, unemployment grew in Previously Unemployed and Industry, while it decreased in Services, Construction, and Agriculture and Fishing.
Regarding hiring, 65,806 contracts were signed in the Basque Autonomous Community in May, an 11.41% increase from the previous month and a 6.54% rise compared to last year. Of these, 16,237 were permanent contracts, up 14.94% from April and 21.26% from the previous year.
Furthermore, Social Security recorded 1,042,680 affiliated members in Euskadi in May, an increase of 6,813 from the previous month and 13,531 more than in May 2025.
