Employees responsible for tram maintenance in Vitoria-Gasteiz, subcontracted by CAF Turnkey & Engineering, have completed one month of industrial action. The strike, which began on March 27, directly impacts the workforce of this company, which manages the comprehensive maintenance of the city's tram units.
The dispute, which erupted in late March, is not confined to the Vitoria depots but also extends to the Lebario and Sopelana centers. Workers are denouncing a persistent «situation of discrimination» across economic, organizational, and social aspects.
“"It's not a one-day issue; if the trains don't undergo inspection, the system's reliability suffers."
The core of the demands centers on the disparity in conditions between different work centers. According to unions, there are unjustified differences among the company's various locations. Operators are calling for equal rights, effective internal promotion, and genuine negotiation, stating that the strike is the «last resort» to compel the company to negotiate a fair agreement after years of unsuccessful dialogue.
Currently, the strike has not significantly impacted tram users, though its effects are noticeable in the depots. The Gasteiz tram requires thorough daily inspections to ensure safety and address potential malfunctions. While minimum services are being maintained, the strike committee warns that fleet wear and tear will become evident if the conflict continues.
