The Canopée, recognized as one of the most innovative vessels in the European merchant fleet, was sighted this Thursday, June 25th, near Zierbena. This unexpected appearance has captured the attention of local residents, sailing enthusiasts, and maritime traffic observers along the Vizcayan coast.
The ship's presence has been particularly noteworthy due to its distinctive appearance, characterized by four large automated sails raised above its deck. This design is uncommon in modern commercial shipping, positioning the Canopée as a leading example of advanced sustainable maritime transport.
Constructed to transport components for the Ariane 6 space launcher between various European ports and French Guiana, the vessel integrates conventional propulsion with wind assistance. This combination significantly reduces fuel consumption and emissions during its transoceanic voyages.
Its passage through waters near Zierbena drew the attention of many onlookers, primarily due to the vessel's unique silhouette, which was visible from multiple points along the coast and within the port area. This sighting, recorded on Thursday, offers one of the most striking maritime images seen on the Basque coast in recent weeks.
