For another year, the Commerce Department of Gernika-Lumo has opened the registration period for the 'Nik Gernikan' awards, which seek to value the town's identity and socioeconomic dynamism in the face of new consumption habits. The competition will award a total of 4,000 euros distributed across four specific categories aimed at recognizing the trajectory, innovation, neighborhood roots, and culinary excellence of local establishments.
In this way, small businesses and the hospitality sector are once again consolidated as the engine of economic and social life in Gernika-Lumo. With the firm purpose of supporting proximity businesses in a globalized context marked by the homogenization of commercial areas, the City Council has launched the sixth edition of the Nik Gernikan Awards 2026. This call aims to institutionally reward the resilience, adaptation, and daily effort of establishments that bring life to the town's streets.
This edition includes the granting of four independent awards, each with a financial endowment of 1,000 euros. Through this financial incentive and the associated public recognition, the local administration seeks to make visible both new business initiatives that refresh the urban fabric and historic businesses that are an indispensable part of the imagination and daily life of the town's residents.
The recognitions are structured into four distinct categories: the first, commercial trajectory, designed to praise businesses with a long-standing presence; the second, innovative commerce, will reward recent projects that stand out for their adaptability; the third, neighborhood commerce, will focus on proximity stores as a key element for social dynamization; and finally, the hospitality award will highlight the work of local bars and restaurants that actively contribute to reinforcing the rich gastronomic, cultural, and leisure identity of Gernika-Lumo.
The previous edition featured notable winners: Kooperatiba San Isidro Gernika received the commercial trajectory award, Lumiére Concept was honored for innovative commerce, Barandiaran Denda won the neighborhood commerce distinction, and the emblematic Boliña Zaharra received the hospitality award.
Establishments wishing to participate have until August 28, 2026. Commercial and hospitality businesses operating within the municipal boundaries of Gernika-Lumo are eligible. Registration must be processed through the GERTU citizen service or the municipal electronic headquarters, accompanied by a detailed report of the business's merits and photographic material.
The evaluation committee will base its verdict on objective scoring criteria examining applicants' professional trajectory, the introduction of innovative elements in management, their involvement with the town's associative and social fabric, active promotion of Gernika-Lumo's external image, and demonstrated flexibility in adapting to current market demands.
