Euskadi has reinforced its position as a leading territory in the supply of fresh fish to Mercamadrid, confirming "the strategic role of its fishing sector within the national food chain," as stated in the 2025 Annual Report of Mercamadrid. The autonomous community, alongside Galicia, leads the origin of fresh fish traded in Spain's largest fresh food market.
This status underscores the significance of Basque fishing activities and their daily contribution to supplying millions of consumers nationwide. Specifically, the report highlights the crucial role of Gipuzkoa, which ranks as the primary state-level port of origin for fresh fish destined for Mercamadrid. "This data reflects the operational, logistical, and commercial capacity of a sector that has successfully blended tradition, professionalism, and adaptation to new market demands."
Mercamadrid emphasized that Euskadi's leadership in fresh fish supply is built upon a "long maritime and fishing tradition" that continues to be "one of the economic and social pillars of numerous coastal municipalities in the community."
Furthermore, it was noted that the fishing and commercial activities linked to Basque ports constitute "an important source of employment and wealth for the territory, contributing to the preservation of highly specialized professional knowledge and a maritime tradition that is integral to Euskadi's economic and cultural identity."
Additionally, the accumulated experience of shipowners, fishermen, fishing guilds, fish markets, traders, and related companies has enabled the consolidation of an industry recognized "for the quality of its catches, the professionalism of its operators, and its ability to meet the needs of an increasingly demanding market."
