Small businesses in Bilbao will receive specialized training in May and October to address the challenges posed by the surge in online sales, an initiative by BilbaoDendak, the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, and the Chamber of Commerce.

Traditional shopping in small businesses faces increasing competition from companies selling their products online. Adapting to this reality is the purpose of the training program Retail Management: Strategy, Management and Customer Experience, which will be held in May and October, promoted by BilbaoDendak, the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, and the Chamber of Commerce.

"It is aimed at owners and managers of businesses, and up to 20 participants can take part in each session. For this first call, 50% of the places are already filled."

The social cohesion fostered by small businesses and the proximity they offer are some of the main characteristics of this sector, which, as expressed by the director of Territorial Competitiveness and Foreign Promotion of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, must be defended and cared for. Therefore, training for this economic activity is essential, and the knowledge acquired will allow merchants to obtain “practical tools” to implement in their businesses. Likewise, she has advocated for the “professionalization of the sector” to face the challenges that will arise in the future.
A future that, according to the data presented by the director of BilbaoDendak, will not be very positive. “We are moving towards a European model where there are 6-7 businesses per 1,000 inhabitants, while in Euskadi there are currently 10-11 businesses per 1,000 inhabitants,” he detailed. The head of the merchants' association has highlighted that almost 40% of Bizkaia's commerce is concentrated in Bilbao, as, according to the figures provided, the city accounts for “4,000 businesses out of the 10,000” in the Historical Territory. And its representation in employment constitutes around “12-13%” of that in the capital.
This commercial landscape forces current businesses to train to respond to new customer demands. “It is a practical program,” summarized the director of Training at the Bilbao Chamber of Commerce and the ESIC Campus in the city. Among the knowledge that will be transmitted are ideas for “selling with more criteria,” and it is planned to have “high-level teachers.” The main purpose is for business managers to have the means to empower them to make decisions and how they decide them.
The first part of the sessions will take place from May 4 to 14, while the second will be from October 19 to 29. Each session will last 18 hours and will be taught at the Bilbao Chamber of Commerce, which is also the headquarters of ESIC.
