A representative from the hotel sector, recently elected president of the Destino Bilbao association, has expressed apprehension about the upcoming tourist tax in Bizkaia. He believes this measure could negatively impact the region's competitiveness, despite an overall positive trend in tourism.
The president of the association, which comprises 28 hotels, emphasized that while tourism is beneficial, it is crucial to avoid overcrowding. However, he maintains that Bilbao does not experience mass tourism, which helps preserve the city's appeal.
“"It's fantastic that new hotels are opening as long as they generate quality demand."
He also highlighted the issue of illegal tourist apartments, urging institutions to exert greater control. Legal accommodation offerings, conversely, are welcomed if they ensure investment and quality. He considers Bilbao's tourism offering to be adequate and stressed the importance of continued collaboration to maintain its attractiveness in the future.
The tourism sector has cited uncertainties such as fuel price fluctuations and international conflicts, yet the outlook for Bilbao's summer season remains optimistic. Furthermore, he underscored the city's excellent value for money and noted that visitors, particularly those who appreciate culture and gastronomy, leave satisfied.
