The construction of floating marine wind turbines to be located in the Gulf of Roses, on the Costa Brava, will take place in Tarragona. This activity will be possible thanks to the expansion of the Balearic Quay at the Port of Tarragona, the works for which will begin soon after securing a 24 million euro subsidy from IDAE (Institute for Diversification and Energy Saving).
The Minister of Territory, Sílvia Paneque, highlighted during a visit to the port that this project will enable the manufacturing of turbines to be seen in both the Gulf of Lion and the Costa Brava. Paneque emphasized the strategic importance of the initiative for Catalonia's energy transition and for positioning the Port of Tarragona at a leading logistical level. The mayor of Tarragona, Rubén Viñuales, stressed that the project represents a "paradigm shift" and will turn the city into a "leading hub for floating offshore wind power".
The Balearic Quay is expected to be operational by the end of 2028, with the capacity to construct up to six marine turbines simultaneously. The president of the Port of Tarragona, Santiago Castellà, noted that the subsidy will accelerate a "decisive and strategic" project that will diversify port operations.
Approximately 150 companies will be involved in these projects, facilitating the conversion of the strong onshore wind energy sector to this new field. Castellà emphasized that the initiative is not only crucial for the energy transition and renewables but also as a "source of wealth and job creation" for Tarragona and Catalonia.
The director of the Catalan Energy Institute, Anna Camp, added that it is a "highly competitive sector with high added value that allows for skilled employment," estimating the creation of around 2,600 jobs and an investment of 670 million euros.
Furthermore, Camp highlighted the project's role in the country's energy independence, enabling a reduction in dependency with "renewable energy." Minister Paneque reiterated the project's strategic nature, framed within the "model of the country," and defined it as a "generator of opportunities".
The minister concluded that these projects are "key to diversifying the economy, decarbonizing the logistics chain, and reindustrializing the country," creating "hundreds of jobs" and balancing the territory. She believes the investment "makes the Port of Tarragona one of the nerve centers of the Catalan economy".
During the appearance, the approval of the concession for the operation of the Andalusia Quay to Cosco Shipping Lines and PTP was also announced, with further details expected the following day.
