This urban planning modification is a crucial step towards realizing the Hub Mont-roig project, an initiative promoted by the group Ametller Origen and considered strategic by the Generalitat de Catalunya. The change involves transforming approximately 112 hectares of non-developable land into a developable sector for agro-industrial activities.
The plan includes the construction of high-tech greenhouses for horticultural production, as well as spaces dedicated to research, innovation, and training within the agri-food sector. A significant portion of the area, over 210,000 square meters, will be allocated to public systems such as green spaces, open areas, and facilities, exceeding the minimum legal requirements.
More than 57,000 square meters are reserved for facilities that will serve the sector, including technical installations and training spaces. Regarding water management, the project emphasizes reuse and circularity, with water supplied from the Consorci d'Aigües de Tarragona network and treated reclaimed water from the local treatment plant.
Measures have been incorporated to minimize environmental and landscape impact, such as a perimeter strip of green areas acting as a visual screen and ecological corridor, conservation of existing vegetation, and greenhouse designs that adapt to the terrain. The protection of rural heritage elements is also planned.
Urbanization costs are estimated at around 6.8 million euros, with a total investment exceeding 50 million. Ametller Origen anticipates the creation of hundreds of direct jobs, particularly technical roles, in addition to indirect employment generated by the activity.
The development will be carried out through a single urban planning instrument to expedite timelines. Following initial approval, the project enters a public information and environmental processing phase for potential objections.
