This milestone, representing the established limit for the initial stage of load tests, has been achieved one month ahead of the schedule projected by the Department of Agriculture. The operation commenced in mid-February and was expected to reach this level within three months.
The water primarily originates from the Rialb reservoir, channeled through the main canal of the Segarra-Garrigues system, and from the Set river, which saw a significant increase in its flow due to precipitation recorded since late last year and the early months of 2026. According to a spokesperson for the Segarra-Garrigues irrigators' community, the filling plan, initiated five years after the dam's construction, will be completed next year with the remaining 40 hm³.
Over the next three months, the behavior of the compacted earth dam will be monitored to ensure proper ground saturation. No discharge maneuvers will be performed, and the loading process will continue into 2027 until the full capacity of 82 hm³ is reached. The reservoir is managed by Aigües del Ter-Llobregat (ATL).
The commissioning of the reservoir culminates a 25-year project that has involved an investment of 90 million euros. The Government and the Generalitat unblocked the filling process in early February, after years of delay. Its primary function is irrigation, but it also aims to supply quality drinking water to municipalities in the Garrigues and Segrià regions.
With over 40 hm³ already stored, there is sufficient water to irrigate 10,000 hectares, according to sources from the Department. The expansion of the Segarra-Garrigues system has focused on boosting irrigation sectors supplied by the reservoir. Aigües del Segarra-Garrigues (ASG) is implementing the irrigation distribution network for sector 12, covering 624.65 hectares in Granyena and Torrebesses, with water supply expected to begin in March of next year.
Additionally, water is planned to be supplied to an extra 500 hectares in sector 10-11-14 across the municipalities of L'Albagés, El Cogul, Granyena, and El Soleràs. The main reservoirs in Lleida are currently above 70% capacity, with Oliana and Rialb at 75% and 86% respectively, totaling 410 cubic hectometers.
