The state has awarded aid totaling over 24 million euros for the renovation of wind farms and the upgrade of hydroelectric power plants in five municipalities within the province of Tarragona: Caseres (Terra Alta), Vilalba dels Arcs (Terra Alta), L’Argentera (Baix Camp), Flix (Ribera d'Ebre), and Xerta (Baix Ebre).
This initiative, part of the second call for the 'Repotenciación Circular' program, is led by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) and managed by the Institute for Diversification and Energy Saving (IDAE). The ministry highlights the 'technological leap' of this plan, akin to a 'new Renove plan,' which will enhance the utilization of renewable resources in existing locations by replacing obsolete systems with state-of-the-art equipment.
The total projected investment for these six projects in the province is around 170 million euros. The state subsidies will cover a significant portion of this expenditure, fostering a new energy industry in Tarragona.
The aid is allocated to both the renovation of wind farms and the improvement of hydroelectric power plants. The wind farms receiving support are located in Caseres (with two projects), Vilalba dels Arcs, and L’Argentera.
The most ambitious project is in Caseres, involving the modernization of Mudèfer I, with an investment of 65 million euros and a validated aid of nearly nine million. Mudèfer II, also in Caseres, receives 2.5 million euros for a total investment of 18.2 million.
In Vilalba dels Arcs, the subsidy amounts to 3.3 million euros for a project costing 17.8 million. In L’Argentera, 7.7 million euros will go towards the repowering of Trucafort, with a total cost of 45.4 million.
Additionally, aid has been granted for two hydroelectric power plants in the Terres de l'Ebre region. The Xerta plant on the Ebre River will receive 1.3 million euros for its technological and environmental renovation, valued at 6.6 million. The plant in Flix, also on the Ebre River, will receive approximately 300,000 euros to improve its ecological flow, with an overall intervention cost of one million.
The Les Calobres wind farm in El Perelló (Baix Ebre) was excluded from the aid as it exceeded the maximum budget for the call, despite applying for four million euros in aid for a 20 million euro project.
