This innovative project began in September 2021, following the volcanic eruption in La Palma, when its creators decided to transform adversity into a creative opportunity. The result is a patented sole that combines real volcanic ash from Cumbre Vieja with rubber, an “unprecedented technical innovation,” according to the Center for Initiatives and Tourism.
The sole's composition not only holds symbolic value of rebirth but also provides functionality, giving the footwear distinctive resistance and character. The proposal aligns with the ‘barefoot’ or minimalist footwear concept, characterized by an anatomical shape, wide toe box, and ‘Zero Drop’ (no height difference), ensuring total foot freedom and a natural posture.
“"We don't just shoe feet; we restore the freedom to step with the strength of a volcano."
VOLKAN designs have been rigorously tested on La Palma's demanding trails, demonstrating durability and comfort. The promoters emphasize that the footwear offers resistance comparable to basalt and flexibility similar to coastal wind. Furthermore, the brand seeks to revitalize the footwear industry, showing how a municipality like El Paso can lead a technological and health revolution with an eye on the international market.
