Mercadona has closed 2025 with a notable boost in the Canary Islands, allocating 810 million euros to purchases from Archipelago suppliers and generating over 300 new jobs, raising its workforce to more than 5,100 employees.

The company for physical supermarkets and online sales detailed a total investment of 20.7 million euros in the islands during the past fiscal year. Of this amount, 17.5 million were allocated to improving its commercial network and implementing the 'Ready to Eat' section, while 3.2 million were invested in its logistics centers in Ingenio (Gran Canaria) and Granadilla (Tenerife), in addition to the satellite warehouse in Fuerteventura.
Purchases from Canary suppliers exceeded 810 million euros, collaborating with over 700 local companies for products, non-commercial supplies, and services. This purchasing volume is interpreted as an indicator of the distribution sector's integration with the local productive fabric, strengthening relationships based on transparency and long-term agreements.
Among the local products acquired are 70 million kilos of bananas, 7 million kilos of tomatoes, and 5 million kilos of potatoes, among others. The company emphasizes that more than 85% of its assortment is of national origin, ensuring stable commercial outlets for island production.
In terms of employment, the creation of 300 new jobs in 2025 brings the workforce to over 5,100 people. The company has implemented improvements such as an additional week of vacation, salary updates linked to the CPI, and performance-based bonuses, which have resulted in the payment of two or three additional monthly salaries depending on seniority.
Mercadona's commercial network in the Canary Islands comprises 82 supermarkets, of which 71 are adapted to the 'Tienda 8' model, 70 feature the 'Listo para Comer' section, and 54 offer charging points for electric vehicles. In 2025, a new supermarket was opened in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and a store in Santa Cruz de Tenerife was renovated.
As part of its waste prevention policy, Mercadona donated 985 tons of food suitable for consumption to 37 Canary social entities, equivalent to over 16,420 shopping carts.
