The Government of the Canary Islands has authorized the installation of a third wind turbine at the Botija wind farm in Gáldar, adding 0.8 MW and increasing total capacity to 2.4 MW, boosting local energy sovereignty.

After several years of procedures, the Gáldar City Council has received approval from the Government of the Canary Islands for the execution of the third wind turbine at the Botija wind farm. This resolution, published on Friday, April 10, 2026, in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands, will allow a new turbine to be added to the two already existing in Los Llanos de Botija, significantly increasing the park's clean energy production capacity and positioning Gáldar as a benchmark in the transition towards renewable energies.
Decree 50/2026, dated March 30, details the authorization for the installation of an 800-kilowatt turbine, which will join the two operational mills to reach a total power of 2.4 megawatts. The second phase of the wind farm involves the supply, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of an Enercon E-53 technology wind turbine, along with complementary connection and evacuation infrastructures.
The total investment for this phase amounts to 1,884,538 euros. This figure will be significantly alleviated thanks to a state subsidy of 1.2 million euros from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, complemented by 684,598 euros subsidized by the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands. This financial boost adds to the first phase of the park, which required an investment of 2.5 million euros, covered by municipal funds and European Union aid.

"This definitive authorization allows the municipality to make a qualitative leap towards greater energy sovereignty."

Teodoro Sosa · Mayor of Gáldar
The mayor of Gáldar, Teodoro Sosa, highlighted the importance of this approval, which he considers the result of a complex but essential administrative process. With the agreement's publication in the BOC, the City Council can immediately initiate the final procedures and the tender for civil and assembly works, with the aim of commissioning the new wind turbine as soon as possible and consolidating Gáldar as an autonomous reference in the municipal management of renewable energies.
From an environmental and economic perspective, the operation of this third wind turbine will generate an estimated production of 2,473 megawatt-hours per year, equivalent to an annual saving of 620.72 tons of oil equivalent. Furthermore, it will prevent the emission of 2,040 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, contributing to Canarias' decarbonization goals for 2040 and reducing the generation surcharge historically borne by non-peninsular electrical systems.
The Cabildo de Gran Canaria has imposed mandatory conditions, such as the restoration and cultivation of an equivalent affected area, adequate landscape integration through chromatic treatment, and the establishment of a bond to ensure the dismantling and restoration of the land at the end of the installation's useful life. Likewise, the Decree orders the modification of the affected municipal urban planning, which will be executed with the first substantial modification thereof, as provided by Canarian sectoral electricity legislation to streamline the implementation of renewable infrastructures of general interest.
The project's processing began in November 2022 with the Gáldar City Council's request for a declaration of general interest, obtaining this recognition in March 2023. The procedure underwent technical and environmental modifications derived from the Environmental Impact Statement of September 2024, which required the relocation of the installation to ensure territorial compatibility. In June 2025, the City Council formalized a lease agreement for 6,000 square meters with the Samsó family in Los Llanos de Botija, near the current location, thus complying with the authorized alternatives and paving the way for the definitive resolution.
