The Gáldar City Council has secured authorization to add a third wind turbine to the Botija Wind Farm, increasing its capacity to 2.4 MW and reinforcing its commitment to renewable energy.

The resolution, published in the Official Gazette of Canarias via Decree 50/2026 on March 30, will allow the addition of a 0.8 MW turbine to the two already operational in Los Llanos de Botija. With this addition, the park will reach a total power of 2.4 megawatts, establishing itself as the first fully municipal wind farm in the archipelago.
The second phase of the project, which includes the supply, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of an Enercon E-53 technology wind turbine, along with the necessary infrastructure for its connection and evacuation, represents an investment of 1,884,538.17 euros. This amount will be financed by a state subsidy of 1.2 million euros and 684,598.17 euros contributed by the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of Canarias.
According to technical reports, the new wind turbine will produce approximately 2,473 megawatt-hours per year, equivalent to 620.72 tons of oil and preventing the emission of 2,040 tons of carbon dioxide. These figures highlight the progress towards the decarbonization of Canarias and the reduction of generation overcosts in non-peninsular electrical systems.
The Cabildo de Gran Canaria has established a series of conditions to ensure the territorial and landscape integration of the project. These include the restoration of cultivable land, specific chromatic treatment for the installation, and a bond to guarantee its dismantling at the end of its useful life. The decree also contemplates the modification of the affected municipal urban planning.
The administrative process began in November 2022 with the request for a declaration of general interest, obtained in March 2023. Following technical and environmental adjustments derived from the Environmental Impact Statement of September 2024, the City Council formalized a lease agreement for 6,000 square meters in Los Llanos de Botija in June 2025, complying with the conditions required by the regional administration. With this authorization, Gáldar can initiate the final procedures and the bidding for the works, consolidating its position as a benchmark in municipal renewable energy management in Canarias.
