The Canarian banana has emerged from a prolonged period of low prices, with island producers celebrating a significant increase in the value of their fruit at origin, surpassing production costs for the first time in 2026.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, origin prices for Canarian bananas have exceeded 0.85 euros per kilo for wholesale in peninsular markets. This improvement, observed since Holy Week and consolidated between April 6 and 12, brings relief to farmers.
This increase allows local producers to receive amounts per kilo that are above the usual range of agricultural production costs in the islands, estimated between 0.70 and 0.80 euros per kilo. This payment is received before the direct aid from POSEI, which amounts to 0.33 euros per kilo marketed.

"This is, therefore, a very important market situation because before, throughout this year, that had not been achieved."

The current situation contrasts with the poor price streak experienced since the end of 2021, the year of the Tajogaite volcano, and the challenging 2023. Wholesale prices for the best quality bananas are currently around 1.4 euros per kilo, generating optimism in the sector.
