The Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) is analyzing the feasibility of establishing a green hydrogen fueling station within the port premises. This initiative responds to the forecast of a significant rise in the use of vehicles powered by this type of fuel for the port's logistical operations.
According to statements made by APBA president Gerardo Landaluce to El Conciso, the drafting of tender specifications for a future bidding process, not expected before 2027, is currently underway. Concurrently, the APBA is receiving proposals from several operators interested in installing a provisional hydrogen supply point.
The decarbonization of port activities is a key objective, and the arrival of new hydrogen vehicles, such as the tractor unit from company EVO which has already undergone testing at the port, highlights the need for stable refueling infrastructure.
The APBA prioritizes the creation of a permanent facility to address the port's future needs. The location for the future station is being considered in the vicinity of the Isla Verde quay. In the interim, the provisional station may be established next to the service station operated by Moeve, given its strategic position near logistics facilities and freight routes.
The development of the tender specifications will include provisions to facilitate access for interested operators to European, national, and regional aid. Companies considering participation are already exploring calls for community funds and aid programs from the Junta de Andalucía to make these significant projects financially viable.
The testing phase of EVO's tractor unit at the port has accelerated the need for such infrastructure. The company, which advocates for hydrogen-powered electric vehicles in port logistics, received support from Logistika 360 to test the H2 Tractor's effectiveness. It is anticipated that other logistics companies will adopt zero-emission units in the coming years, thereby increasing hydrogen demand.
