The Netzero Doñana project, coordinated by ARA, has conducted field work in the Condado de Huelva region to identify opportunities and barriers in the transition towards more sustainable and efficient agricultural production. A key stop was Bionest, a company situated in the heart of Doñana, specializing in the organic production of strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries.
From Bionest's Quality department, they highlight their strong connection with the environment and full dedication to field care as their identifying features. Their organic certifications and annual renewals are the result of teamwork that covers the entire production process, from field to table. The company emphasizes the characteristic flavor and aroma of its fruits, aiming for the consumer experience to go beyond mere appearance.
Bionest annually produces between 9,000 and 11,000 tons of fruit, with 50% being strawberries, 25% blueberries, 20% raspberries, and 5% blackberries. 85% of its merchandise is destined for export, primarily to European Union countries, although it has also opened up to other non-European markets in Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
Among future challenges, Bionest advocates for the sector to join forces to seek joint solutions, particularly regarding the determination of the maximum cultivation area.
This project involves the participation of the University of Cádiz, CLANER, and Considera, along with the three Rural Development Groups of Doñana: GDR Aljarafe-Doñana (ADAD), ADERCON, and GDR Campiña de Jerez y Costa Noroeste de Cádiz. It is funded by the industry line of CDTI Innovación from the Ministry of Science and Innovation, within the framework of the Doñana Actions of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.
