Valenciaport awards renewable fuel plant concession in Sagunto

The project, involving an investment of 20 million euros, will be located at the south quay 2 of the Port of Sagunto and will have a duration of 25 years.

The Port Authority of Valencia (APV) has approved the concession for a renewable fuel plant at the Port of Sagunto, with an investment of 20 million euros and a 25-year duration.

The Governing Council of the Port Authority of Valencia (APV) has greenlit an administrative concession for the construction and operation of a renewable fuel processing and production plant for loading and unloading at the Port of Sagunto. The concession, granted to FIVE NEXT USEOIL SOLUTIONS, SL- UCO TRADING SPAIN, SL, will have a duration of 25 years and involve an investment of 20 million euros. The project will occupy an area of 27,800 square meters at the south quay 2 of the port.
The plant will be dedicated to the reception, storage, conditioning, treatment, and transformation of residual fatty materials, such as used cooking oils or animal fats, for the production of advanced biofuels through biomass transformation.
In the same meeting, the APV Governing Council also accepted two requests for the provision of the commercial service of liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply to ships via tanker, at the ports of Valencia, Sagunto, and Gandia. The concessions, with a duration of six years, have been awarded to SHELL WESTERN LNG BV and AXPO IBERIA, SL. This commitment to alternative energies is part of Valenciaport's Net Zero Emissions Plan, which aims to lead the decarbonization of the Valencian ports.
Additionally, TERMINAL MARÍTIMA DE GRANELES DE SAGUNTO, SL has been granted a license for the provision of loading, stowing, unstowing, unloading, and transshipment services for goods at a multipurpose terminal in the Port of Sagunto, valid for six years. The provision of railway shunting commercial services has also been authorized for CSP LOGITREN SA for a period of three years at the ports of Valencia and Sagunto.
Regarding rail traffic, the first quarter of the year has seen significant growth. Between January and April, Valenciaport handled 1,285,476 tons by train, a 20.42% increase compared to the previous year, and 97,155 TEUs, a 21.69% increase. The year-on-year trend shows increases exceeding 16%.
In terms of total April traffic, 6,855,146 tons of goods were managed, a 4.38% decrease compared to the previous year, and 500,604 TEUs of containerized traffic, a 2.57% decrease. In the first quarter, Valenciaport managed 25.5 million tons (-3.60%) and 1,813,446 TEUs (+0.27%).
China remains the main trading partner, with a 23.78% increase in tons and a 25.25% increase in TEUs. The United States also shows growth in tons (+7.63%), despite a decrease in TEUs (-13.65%). Notable decreases in container traffic were recorded with the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Italy, Turkey, and India.
