The Torrevieja City Council has approved the provisional concession of the La Plasa market to Origen Murcia, S.A., which will invest nearly one million euros to transform it into a traditional and gastronomic space.

The Local Government Board of Torrevieja has approved the provisional award of the concession for the La Plasa market to the company Origen Murcia, S.A.. This company will manage the space for ten years, with an annual fee of 56,300 euros. The operation foresees a private investment of close to one million euros to convert the premises into a traditional and gastronomic market.
Once the award is definitive and the contract is formalized, the company will be responsible for operating the traditional market and the future gastronomic market. The latter will be located on the ground floor and mezzanine of the building, totaling a combined area of more than 2,000 square meters.
The project aims for La Plasa to be a modern and open space throughout the day, combining the sale of fresh, local, and gourmet products with an innovative gastronomic offer. A municipal spokesperson has stated that the objective is to move away from the market model that closed at midday, to transform it into an active meeting point that generates economic movement, attracts visitors, and revitalizes the urban center.

This action contemplates the creation of approximately 230 jobs, both direct and indirect, positioning the project as one of the main drivers of revitalization for the center of Torrevieja. The new market will be organized into different areas for traditional shopping and consumption within the space itself, and the management model foresees the participation of local entrepreneurs and freelancers to integrate the city's economic fabric.
The government team emphasizes that the essence of the traditional market will be maintained and the continuity of current vendors will be facilitated under favorable conditions. The current concession only affects the ground floor and mezzanine, so the City Council will open a new file to define the use of the second and third floors of the building, studying the most beneficial options for the city from the point of view of public interest and social return. Possibilities include a multi-purpose hall for institutional events and the celebration of cultural and gastronomic events.
A municipal spokesperson has sought to convey a message of reassurance regarding these upper floors, ensuring that no disruptive activities that alter coexistence will be implemented. The City Council expects La Plasa to be operational between the end of this year and early 2027, depending on the progress of the works. With this award, Torrevieja takes a decisive step to reactivate one of its most emblematic spaces, strengthening commercial activity, generating employment, and consolidating a new focal point of attraction in the city center.
