Once the contract is formalized, the company will manage both the traditional market and the gastromarket, which will be located on the ground floor and mezzanine of the building, covering an area of over 2,000 m². This project aims to convert 'La Plasa' into a modern space that combines the sale of fresh, local, and gourmet products with an innovative gastronomic offer, following successful models already implemented in cities such as Madrid, Seville, and Murcia.
“"We want it to stop being a space that closed at midday and become an active meeting point throughout the day, capable of generating economic activity, attracting visitors, and revitalizing the urban center."
The initiative involves a private investment of close to one million euros and the creation of about 230 jobs, including direct and indirect positions, consolidating it as one of the main drivers of revitalization for the city center. The City Council has guaranteed the continuity of the traditional market, offering favorable conditions for current vendors to remain in the space.
The new market will be structured into different areas that will allow both traditional shopping and on-site consumption, also integrating local entrepreneurs and self-employed individuals into the management model. Regarding the upper floors of the building, the mayor has clarified that no disruptive activities will be implemented and that a new process will be opened to define the most beneficial uses for Torrevieja, analyzing proposals from the perspective of public interest and social return.
Among the ideas proposed for the upper floors are a multi-purpose hall for institutional or cultural events, or activities linked to festivals. The council expects the new market to be operational by the end of this year or early next year, depending on the progress of the works currently underway within the planned deadlines.
