The Institute of Micro and Nanotechnology (IMN-CSIC) is seeking a highly motivated candidate to co-apply for an FPU doctoral fellowship, funded by the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Universities, focusing on the development of ultrathin III-V tandem solar cells.

The project's main objective is to push photovoltaic efficiency beyond the theoretical limit of single-junction cells, such as conventional silicon. To achieve this, ultrathin III-V-on-Si tandem solar cells will be investigated, aiming to aggressively reduce production costs through controlled disordered photonics and a novel epitaxial lift-off process.
These advancements, to be developed at the IMN-CSIC facilities in Tres Cantos, Madrid, will directly impact high-value markets like aerospace applications and electric vehicles in the short term.
The selected candidate will focus on fabricating self-assembly photonics structures and semiconductor processing in a cleanroom environment, as well as advanced optoelectronic characterization of materials and devices (EQE, IV, PL). They will also be involved in distributed computation and simulation on high-performance computing servers.
The MBE Group, within the Energy Department at IMN-CSIC, has an extensive track record in III-V epitaxy, advanced photovoltaics, and high-efficiency device engineering. The supervisor possesses extensive international experience in photovoltaics and photonics.
Candidates are required to hold a Bachelor's degree (Grado) and Official Master's degree (Máster Oficial) in Physics, Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field, with a strong academic record and background in semiconductor physics and optoelectronics. Hands-on laboratory experience and device characterization skills will be positively valued. Proficiency in English and Spanish is required.
The institution offers full support for preparing the FPU fellowship proposal. If awarded, the contract will be for 4 years with a standard ministry salary, plus potential allowances for international stays. Interested candidates should send their Curriculum Vitae, academic transcripts, and a brief statement of interest to j.buencuerpo@csic.es before October 30, 2026.
