This decision places the Spanish capital in the same tier as some of the world's major urban, tourist, and business markets. Madrid currently boasts the largest hotel inventory on Airbnb in Spain and Portugal, with 79 active hotels on the platform.
Jaime Rodríguez de Santiago, General Manager for Spain and Portugal at Airbnb Marketing Services S.L., stated during his participation in South Summit that the platform is committed to the hotel category and that Madrid will play a leading role in this new phase.
The choice of Madrid stems from its growing positioning as a leading international capital for business tourism, conferences, and major events. Hotels integrated into Airbnb aim to meet specific demands: short stays, business travel, weekend getaways, and last-minute bookings.
Among the active hotels on the platform in Madrid are brands such as NH, Vincci Hoteles, Smart Rental Group Collection, and Chic & Basic Dot. The capital has been chosen as one of the first strategic destinations for this rollout.
Data shared indicates that the average hotel stay in Madrid through Airbnb is 1.94 nights, reflecting the significance of business travelers and short breaks. The MICE sector in the city accounts for 20% to 25% of overnight stays and attracts around three million professional travelers annually, according to Madrid Destino.
Airbnb emphasizes that hotels and accommodations do not compete but rather cater to different traveler needs. In fact, 55% of users who book a hotel on Airbnb later return to the platform to book accommodation as well.
The growth of this category in Madrid is robust: hotel bookings on the platform increased by 28% in February compared to January and by 45% in March compared to February, solidifying the capital as a priority market.
