The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and the Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities, Diana Morant, visited the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (ICMAT-CSIC) in Madrid to learn about recent breakthroughs in the study of fluid equations, driven by artificial intelligence.

The research by scientists Diego Córdoba (ICMAT-CSIC) and Luis Martínez-Zoroa (Cunef University) has been fundamental to these advances. Their mathematical strategy, known as the "cascade" of vorticity layers, has provided a basis for teams that have announced progress on the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations, tackling even one of the millennium problems using artificial intelligence (AI) tools.
During the visit, authorities attended a seminar and met with the researchers to gain firsthand knowledge of their work. Córdoba explained the long trajectory of the research, which dates back to his doctoral thesis at Princeton in 1998. He recounted that the president showed great interest in the field of mathematics and science research, and concern for the training of new generations in the context of AI's integration.
The visit also included a tour of the center's library, with its collection of first editions of science books, and concluded with a press conference where the Government announced new measures for the creation of universities.
Pedro Sánchez emphasized that "betting on knowledge over time, having conviction, and persevering is the key to scientific advancement." He highlighted the need for a "strong public university system," capable of training talent and sustaining research.
Other personalities attending the visit included Juan Cruz Cigudosa, Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Universities; Francisco Martín Aguirre, Government Delegate in the Community of Madrid; and Amaya Mendikoetxea, Rector of the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM), among others.
