The Provincial Council of Álava has confirmed that the new management model for the AP-68 will come into effect in mid-November. The institution has decided to apply a 70% reduction in rates for light vehicles and 50% for heavy traffic.
The price change will be substantial. In the Álava section, the cost per kilometer will drop from 22 to 6 cents. Consequently, the total price for the 55-kilometer route will decrease from 11.20 euros to 3.35 euros.
To modernize the payment system, the Council has invested over 37 million euros. The new system will use arches, gantries, and VIA-T devices, allowing users to link credit or debit cards via a web registration. However, machines for cash and card payments will remain available on main routes.
The revenue collected will be allocated to road maintenance (16 million euros annually) and further investments (32 million euros). This measure was approved through an agreement between EAJ, PSE-EE, EH Bildu, and Elkarrekin Araba.
