Basque Hotels See 9.2% Rise in Tourist Entries and 3.3% in Overnight Stays During Easter

Hotels in the Basque Country surpassed last year's figures during the Easter period, with a notable increase in international tourist arrivals.

Hotels in the Basque Autonomous Community welcomed 57,123 tourists during Easter, a 9.2% increase from last year, and recorded 116,132 overnight stays, a 3.3% rise.

Between April 2nd and 5th, nearly three-quarters of hotel capacity was occupied, reaching 80% when measured by rooms, representing an increase of 0.2% and 1.8% respectively. Foreign arrivals accounted for 43.8% of the total, and overnight stays 44.4%, with rises of 6.4% and 5.1%. Domestic tourism also showed improved figures, with an 11.5% increase in entries and a 2% rise in overnight stays.
The performance varied across territories: in Araba, entries grew by only 0.3%, compared to 9.1% in Gipuzkoa and 12% in Bizkaia. Overnight stays increased by 7% in Bizkaia and 1.4% in Gipuzkoa, while they decreased by 2.8% in Araba.
In the capital cities, Vitoria-Gasteiz saw a 1.4% drop in entries and a 7.4% decrease in overnight stays in Easter 2026 compared to 2025. San Sebastián recorded an 9.8% increase in entries and a 5% rise in overnight stays, while Bilbao saw a 2.3% increase in entries and a 1% rise in overnight stays.
Throughout April, tourist entries in Basque hotels represented 16.1% of the month's total (354,826), 5.2% more than the previous year, with 688,974 nights registered, a 5% increase. The average stay in April was 1.94 days, identical to the same month last year.
Entries in Araba grew by 1.1% and overnight stays by 2.3%, while in Bizkaia the increases were 7.4% and 8%. In Gipuzkoa, entries rose by 4% and overnight stays by 2.8%.
The average daily rate increased by 9.7% across the Basque Country, reaching 114.7 euros. It was higher in Gipuzkoa (122.7 euros) and Bizkaia (113.2 euros) than in Araba (97 euros). In San Sebastián, the price of a hotel room reached 144.3 euros in April, above Bilbao's 125.3 euros and Vitoria-Gasteiz's 83.1 euros.
