Gipuzkoa leads in average household spending in Euskadi, reaching 40,917 euros last year, primarily due to the increase in housing prices, energy bills, and food. The 11.3% rise in daily expenses for Gipuzkoan families significantly surpasses the increases recorded in Bizkaia (4.8%) and Araba (5.7%). These are key findings from the household spending survey published by the Basque statistics institute Eustat, which places the average household expenditure in Euskadi at 38,835 euros, and per person at 16,642 euros.
Across the entire Basque Autonomous Community, the spending categories with the largest average increase per household were transport (29.1%), health (18.4%), and education (15.2%). In contrast, the lowest increases were observed in information and communications (1.1%), leisure, entertainment, and culture (1.9%), and housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels (3.1%). Nevertheless, housing remains the largest component of daily spending, accounting for 34.5% of the average expenditure for both Basques and Gipuzkoans.
In Gipuzkoa, the total expenditure to cover housing-related bills amounts to approximately 4 million euros, translating to 13,642 euros per family. This is the largest spending category, followed by food and non-alcoholic beverages (6,420 euros per household), hotels, cafes, and restaurants (5,141), and transport (4,104). The lowest expenditures are on alcoholic beverages, tobacco, and narcotics (501 euros) and education (773 euros).
Eustat's data also highlights the impact of household size on per-person spending. Single-person households spent an average of 25,938 euros per person in 2025, 55.9% more than the Basque average (16,642 euros). Households with two members recorded an average per-person spending of 20,534 euros, 23.4% above the average. As the number of household members increases, the average per-person spending decreases: 14,517 euros for three-member households and 11,747 euros for those with four or more.
Furthermore, households whose main source of income is self-employment, property, and capital income showed the highest average household spending in 2025, at 43,796 euros annually, which is 12.6% above the Basque average.
