The growth of experience tourism, the demand for functional and healthy foods, and the rise of sustainable fashion are opening doors that Bizkaia's primary sector can leverage. The capacity of institutions like Aberekin to supply cutting-edge genetics and the vision of companies to invest in innovative livestock infrastructure are the pillars supporting these opportunities. However, a good understanding of the market is essential to avoid speculative bubbles.
At the end of the 20th century, ostrich and emu farming was presented as the great hope for alternative livestock. In Bizkaia, several farms were established with the aim of commercializing lean meat, leather, and large eggs. Nevertheless, the lack of a robust distribution chain and high maintenance costs led to the decline of massive commercial production.
Andean alpacas represent another option. Unlike other livestock models where the animal is merely an extractive resource, the alpaca is at the center of a service proposal that includes guided tours, spinning workshops, and assisted therapy activities for people with special needs. The docility of these animals and their low environmental impact make them ideal species for peri-urban and tourist areas. Several farms exist in Bizkaia.
Furthermore, buffalo farming for milk production, used to make the popular fresh cheese variety known as mozzarella, is gaining ground. A renowned chef from the Etxebarri restaurant, considered one of the best steakhouses in the world, pastures his own herd of buffaloes in Axpe-Marzana. More than a dozen females and a male of this bovine, originally from Southeast Asia, graze in the shadow of Amboto. Herds can also be observed in Enkarterri. Compared to traditional cattle, buffalo milk has significantly higher levels of fat and protein, optimizing cheese-making processes. While bovine milk produces 3.5% to 4% fat, buffalo milk can reach 9%.
Snail farming, or heliciculture, has found a successful model in Orduña based on sustainability and ecological certification. Barraskibide, located in the Lendoñobeitia neighborhood, is the first farm of its kind in Euskadi to integrate the entire production cycle under organic farming standards.
