The reconstruction of the Tortosa municipal slaughterhouse, affected by a fire in February 2024, has become a complex process with a considerable increase in costs and intense negotiations with the insurer.

Initially, the recovery of the building and the resumption of activity was estimated to cost approximately two million euros, with completion expected by 2026. However, a technical preliminary project raised this figure to five million, a valuation that surprised those involved. After several negotiations, with the mediation of the Generalitat, the cost was reduced to 3.8 million euros.
Currently, the Tortosa City Council is working to ensure that the insurer covers the full costs. The policy provides 1,750,000 euros for the replacement of the building, but the council argues that necessary improvements to comply with current legislation, which is much more demanding than when the previous facility was built, must be included. These improvements include, for example, replacing the roof with fireproof material and updating machinery.

"We are in the phase of preparing the tender for the executive project drafting and construction management. We hope to approve it shortly and publish it on the new contractor profile that we will have to create for the mixed company. From there, we understand that in six months we will have the executive project."

due to administrative inconveniences and difficulties with the insurer. To close the claim, it is essential to present a finalized preliminary project, and current negotiations aim to avoid cutting services and ensure that the new slaughterhouse complies with current regulations.
During this period, some entrepreneurs have opted to seek alternatives or have retired. Activity was initially transferred to Morella and subsequently to Burriana. Meanwhile, the Tortosa City Council has absorbed the additional costs of the activity, such as animal transport and slaughter services. Despite the difficulties, maintaining the slaughterhouse is considered essential, as it is the largest among the smaller ones in the demarcation and the only one in the province that offers pig slaughter services, ensuring a quality and proximity service in the region.
