The company Taüll Orgànic has established the main commercial plantation of mountain arnica in Catalonia, with two hectares dedicated to organic production for the cosmetic and anti-inflammatory product industry. The success of the cultivation has allowed expansion into the neighboring villages of Durro and Malpàs.
With the aim of transforming the flowering of arnica and edelweiss into a tourist attraction, the first guided tours will begin this weekend. These plants, which are endangered and whose harvesting in the wild is prohibited, are exported by the company to international markets such as the United States, Germany, and Italy.
The manager of Taüll Orgànic, who has not been identified to protect their privacy, highlighted the meticulous manual care in harvesting the flowers, selecting those with the highest concentration of active ingredients. This attention to detail has positioned the product in the global market, demonstrating that "the value of the product depends not only on the botanical species, but on the control and care in the extraction process".
The company manages an area of 2.5 hectares distributed among Malpàs, Durro, and Taüll, producing approximately one ton of fresh product annually. In addition to arnica and edelweiss, the cultivation is being diversified with medicinal plants adapted to high mountain environments, such as gentian, calendula, chamomile, and rhodiola.
The guided tours, starting in June, have a dual purpose: to foster ecological awareness and to revalue traditional knowledge of medicinal plants. The company's founder, who has not been identified, aims to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable cultivation to prevent "plundering the wild mountain" and to show how science "validates ancestral remedies," by explaining the plants' life cycle, the properties of their active ingredients, and the artisanal transformation processes into premium products.
