After months with its shutters down, one of Reus's most emblematic establishments, the Mesón del Roser, is preparing to embark on a new chapter. The restaurant, known for its hearty breakfast dishes for decades, has changed hands with the intention of preserving its soul and tradition.
The closure at the end of February marked the end of over 45 years of its previous owner's career, who retired. Now, an experienced chef, owner of a Basque cuisine restaurant in Botarell, is taking over. This new manager will bring a personal touch to the menu, incorporating typical dishes from his homeland.
Among the new gastronomic offerings, diners can expect dishes such as cod kokotxas and scrambled cod, as well as a section dedicated to traditional tapas from San Sebastián, the chef's hometown. The project also aims to enhance the wine cellar, offering a selection of wines for purchase.
“"We will maintain the philosophy of traditional cuisine; it will basically be the same, a line of spoon dishes and hearty breakfasts, which we will try to improve even further. We all like good stews, and there will be no drastic changes."
Located on Roser street, behind the Sang church, the Mesón del Roser has been a meeting point for generations of Reus residents. With its small local format and robust cuisine, it became a benchmark for hearty breakfasts, a deeply rooted tradition in the area.
The change in management was handled through a local real estate agency specializing in business transfers. Currently, the premises are undergoing renovation work, and if everything proceeds as planned, the reopening could take place during the second week of May, with the goal of continuing to be a benchmark in the city of Reus.
