Workers on indefinite strike in front of a company headquarters

The Avis workforce in Barcelona has initiated an indefinite strike this Monday in protest against an employment regulation file (ERE) that foresees the dismissal of 132 workers, almost a third of the total.

This measure directly affects the customer service center of the car rental company in the city, which currently employs 340 people. The mobilizations began on May 4 with a concentration in front of the company's headquarters at the World Trade Center in Barcelona, as reported by the CGT union, which is the majority union on the committee.

"The company is not reporting losses, but rather intends to delocalize part of its activity to Bulgaria, Poland, and the Philippines."

The union has denounced that Avis had already diverted some services without informing the works council or going through the labor authority. Furthermore, CGT has pointed out that since the pandemic, the workforce has been progressively reduced through punctual dismissals, voluntary resignations, and the freezing of new hires.
Contrary to the justification for the ERE, the union has highlighted that the productivity of the Barcelona headquarters has not decreased, according to the company's own data. In fact, some departments currently have a higher workload than in the past. With these mobilizations, the workers seek to preserve all jobs.
