According to data released by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Enterprise, foreign sales from Girona-based companies reached 694.2 million euros (MEUR) in February. This outcome occurs in a context marked by the ongoing impact of temporary tariffs imposed by China on pork, which have directly affected the region's meat sector.
Girona's meat sector recorded a 22% decrease in its exports during February, totaling 124.46 MEUR, compared to 159.79 MEUR in the same month last year. This downward trend has been observed since January, when a 32% drop was noted. China, previously a major market, has fallen to eleventh position in the list of destinations, with exports decreasing from 32.06 MEUR to 14.34 MEUR in one year.
Chinese tariffs, initially 20% and later reduced to 9.8% for Catalan meat products after an anti-dumping investigation, continue to curb pork sales to the Asian giant. This situation has also affected Girona's overall agri-food sector, which closed February with a 10.9% decline in exports, reaching 271.4 MEUR. Other products such as fruits, juices, and dairy have also seen a setback, although coffee exports have increased, partly due to the Nestlé plant in Girona.
In contrast to the meat sector's situation, machinery manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies have shown positive performance. The machinery sector, considered a driving force for Girona's exports, increased its sales from 40.94 MEUR to 47.34 MEUR. Meanwhile, pharmaceutical companies exported medicines worth 42.87 MEUR, surpassing the 35.01 MEUR from the previous year. These increases have been crucial in offsetting the decline in meat exports and maintaining the overall balance of the region's exports.
Regarding destinations, France remains the primary market for Girona's products, with sales totaling 157.97 MEUR in February. Germany ranks second, with a significant increase in exports from 51.59 MEUR to 68.47 MEUR. Other important markets include Italy, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Poland, and the United States, where exports have also grown despite tariff policies.
