Between January and June 2026, 1,213 commercial companies were established in the province of Girona, a 17.1% increase compared to the same period in 2025. This figure represents the highest number for a first semester in the entire available historical series, which dates back to 2008, according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE).
This increase consolidates the positive trend initiated in 2025, a year in which Girona closed with 2,099 new companies, 6.3% more than the previous year and the highest annual volume since 2007. The first half of 2026 has accelerated this pace, with 177 more companies than the 1,036 registered between January and June 2025.
The best previous first semester before this 2026 was in 2016, with 1,174 companies created. 2024 also saw a high figure (1,147), before a 9.7% drop last year. The 1,213 formations this year exceed the 2016 record by 39 companies.
Monthly analysis indicates that March was the month with the most formations (245), followed by February (232) and January (206). April recorded 184, May 178, and June 168.
The vast majority of new companies, 1,207 out of 1,213 (nearly 99.5%), adopt the form of a limited liability company (sociedad limitada). Only two are public limited companies (sociedades anónimas) and four are of other modalities. This composition is very similar to that of 2025, when 1,032 of the 1,036 companies created were limited liability companies.
Despite the increase in the number of companies created, the contributed capital has decreased by 31%. New companies have disbursed 48.8 million euros, compared to 70.7 million in the same period of 2025, a reduction of almost 21.9 million. The average capital per company stands at around 40,200 euros, 41% less than the approximately 68,200 euros in 2025.
In parallel, company dissolutions have also seen a rebound. During the first semester, 384 companies were closed, 67 more than the 317 of the previous year, an increase of 21.1%. This figure is one of the highest in the historical series for a first semester, only surpassed by 2013 (398 dissolutions).
Despite the increase in closures, the net balance between formations and dissolutions has improved, reaching 829 companies between January and June, compared to 719 the previous year. Only the first semester of 2016 showed a higher balance (851 companies).
Among the companies created with more than 50,000 euros in capital, which collectively sum up to nearly 25 million euros, five large-volume formations stand out: Hotel Bell.Aire 1967 SL (3.96 million), Inversiones Alipa HG SL (3.686 million), KSK 1956 SL (3.322 million), Punt de Serveis Casa Reus SRL (1.776 million), and Grup Tauler MKM Holding SL (1.584 million).
One-third of these large companies are holding or investment companies. Around 25% are linked to real estate development and construction, followed by transport and logistics (14%), hospitality, catering, and tourism (9%), and to a lesser extent, agri-food (5%) and commerce (5%).
