The bid led by the Spanish State, which includes a site in Móra la Nova, aims to be selected by the European Commission under the InvestAI program. The facilities would occupy approximately four hectares in the Molló industrial park and be connected to the Aubals electrical substation, with an initial capacity of 55 megawatts, expandable to 125 megawatts. Water consumption would be minimal thanks to a closed-loop cooling system.
The resolution of the European call is expected by the end of this year or early 2027. If Móra la Nova is chosen, construction would begin in 2027, with the aim of having the center operational by late 2028. The Catalan infrastructure will be located on land owned by Incasòl between Móra la Nova and Tivissa, selected for its immediate availability of industrial land, proximity to the electrical substation, and fiber optic connection.
Mayors from the Ribera d'Ebre region welcome the project as an opportunity for reindustrialization and sustainability. The President of the Regional Council, Francesc Barbero, highlights the low water consumption. The first deputy mayor of Móra la Nova, Carlos Trinchan, emphasizes sustainability and the use of renewable energy, while the municipality prepares for future professional profiles. The mayor of Tivissa, Joan Cedó, notes the municipal collaboration.
From the technology sector, the manager of the TIC Catalunya Sud Cluster, Sergi Novo, considers the gigafactory a "great opportunity" for southern Catalunya. The president of the Cercle Tecnològic, Joan Ramon Barrera, argues that the project will "drive the economy" and facilitate the participation of local companies.
