Foment del Treball has welcomed the Ministry for Ecological Transition's decision to extend the lifespan of the Almaraz nuclear power plant, considering it a "step in the right direction". The association emphasizes that energy policy must be based on "technical, economic, and supply security criteria, not ideological approaches".
In a message posted on the social network X, Foment has requested a review of the current nuclear calendar and the application of the same criteria to Catalan plants. They argue that "Catalonia cannot afford to dispense with stable, non-emissive energy that is essential for the competitiveness of our industry".
The extension of Almaraz until June 2030 was made after confirming its safety and the absence of additional costs for citizens. However, the Spanish executive maintains the definitive closure date for the entire nuclear fleet in 2035.
The employers' association had previously urged Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to reconsider the decision to shut down the Ascó and Vandellòs plants. According to Foment, these three Catalan nuclear units generate approximately 60% of the electricity consumed in the country, representing "a strategic infrastructure for the competitiveness of the Catalan economy".
The current schedule foresees the closure of Ascó I in October 2030, Ascó II in October 2032, and Vandellòs II in February 2035.
