The tender, conducted through an open procedure, received only one proposal, from the Cooperativa Agrària Ramadera Pallars de Sort, SCCL, which will be responsible for managing the service. The initial concession will be for one year, with the possibility of extending it for up to five years.
The operation will be based on collaborative governance between the Sort City Council and the Cooperative, with a Management Commission overseeing the proper development and future of the facility. This initiative marks a new phase for the municipal slaughterhouse, which is already operational and now incorporates the Butchering Room.
This expansion will allow for the completion of the product transformation and preparation process within the territory, adding value to local livestock production and facilitating the commercialization of local, quality products. The new Butchering Room is set to become an essential infrastructure for Pallars, improving services for livestock farmers and strengthening the competitiveness of the agri-food sector.
The project aims to keep part of the value chain within the territory, generating economic activity, new business opportunities, and employment in food processing. Furthermore, it contributes to a circular and sustainable economic model, based on local production and responsible consumption, and seeks to support generational succession in mountain livestock farms.
This has been a priority for the Sort City Council in recent legislatures, with the support of the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food. The council has positively assessed the management being entrusted to a local cooperative, which strengthens the project's local roots and its municipal and regional service vocation. The involvement of other city councils and local agents is anticipated to consolidate this strategic project for the future of Pallars.
Along with the Butchering Room, a cleaning point for animal-drawn vehicles has also been inaugurated for slaughterhouse users.
